Survival Vietnamese

1-to-1 classes · Đà Nẵng & online

Learn the Vietnamese people actually use

I’m Yen. Hour-long private classes with me, online or here in Đà Nẵng. Not textbook Vietnamese: the lines you need when someone is actually talking to you.

The same words, your way at a quán, asking for the bill

Cho em xin tính tiền ạ.

“May I have the bill, please.”

Textbook-polite · with ạ

About a minute. The fundamentals are free, no card needed.

How it works

From your first tone to your first real conversation

  1. 1

    Tell me why you’re learning

Four quick questions. Where you are starting from, and who you want to talk to. I plan around your answers.

  2. 2

Ten minutes a day, in my voice

Start free with the fundamentals: the tones, the pronouns, fifty everyday verbs. Each day I pick a few to say again and a few new ones. Record yourself and hear it beside me.

  3. 3

Then talk to me, one to one

Hour-long classes on Zoom, or 75 minutes in person here in Đà Nẵng. I plan each one around what you have been practising.

Situations, not vocabulary lists

Every class is built round something that actually happens to you. These four come straight off my feed.

What my students say

Stop nodding along.
Start talking back.

Tell me why you’re learning and I’ll plan your first class around it. It takes a minute, and the fundamentals are free.

Before you book

Do I need any Vietnamese to start?

No. I start from the six tones and the pronouns (anh, em, chị), because those two things are what foreigners get wrong first and hardest.

Northern or southern Vietnamese?

Southern, and specifically how people speak in Đà Nẵng and Sài Gòn. I’ll tell you when a word changes north of Huế.

Can we do this online?

Yes. Most of my students are. Classes run on Zoom, and I send notes and audio afterwards on Zalo.

What if I need to cancel?

Reschedule free up to 12 hours before. Inside that window the class comes out of your pack.
